“I was able to use the part of the training about meditations to zero-in and clear my mind and focus on things. A lot of times when you’re doing this your mind is busy, your mind is racing, and trying to really like use that meditation muscle to focus on one thing, that can be very healing for the other person…So that’s one thing I’ve seen that really works. Quieting the mind. Quieting the noise.”
“We already move like we’re superheroes, right, so automatically, when you hear people, you’re like, well, ok, I need to fix this, this, this, and sometimes you really have to slow down in the moment, and really fully absorb what’s going on. Because they always just want you to give your opinion about things, because we naturally will do that! We’re problem solvers, we’re solution based. But sometimes that’s not always needed in the immediate moment. And people need you just to hear them. That’s how I’ve been able to implement the training. Just slowing down. Because it’s always been a thing like, well, you just said something about housing, boom, ok, I can get you a place to stay real quick. But that may not be what they need in that moment. In that moment they may just need you to sit there and listen because that does so much more.”
“One of the biggest things for me is being aware of my own biases and how I might be bringing that to certain folks I might be working with.”
“The training made me aware that there’s a backstory to everything, like, everybody has their own road they took down to get there, and you can’t necessarily put yourself in their shoes all the way and, at the same time, you still have to be able to look out and show compassion to everyone.”
“I gained an understanding that I don’t have to take on everybody’s problems. The quote (from the training) was, ‘I am not a superhero.’ It was hard to hear, but it gave me some relief too to understand that I can’t save everybody. I can give my opinion, I can give resources, but if it doesn’t work out, I can only do what I can do.”
“’Building the emotional resilience to choke out the system.’ That’s the quote that stuck with me the most. That’s what self-compassion is about - building that muscle so we can choke out systems, in the ways that systems have indoctrinated us to act in a certain way or be a certain way that is limiting.”
“The background that CBCT has makes a better Violence Prevention Professional because it helps you become more self-aware and becoming more self-aware always helps you treat other people better no matter how it goes.”
“If you’re in street outreach, I know that CBCT would really, really, really be impactful. It makes it easier to deal with people and take your biases away. I want love just like this person wants love. Now, the process by which they are going about it may be different. But, at the baseline, this is one thing that everybody wants, so it humanizes it, and makes it easier to deal with people and take your biases away. That training would be amazing for anybody to have that have to deal with people.”
